To use a velvet pressing board, place your velvet fabric pile-side down onto the board's needle surface, ensuring the fabric fibers nestle between the needles, then use a steam iron on the wrong side of the fabric to press without directly touching the velvet, preventing the pile from getting crushed; essentially, you're steaming the fabric rather than ironing it directly.
