Rayon Unraveled: Understanding the Differences Between Viscose, Modal, Tencel, and More

Rayon fabrics, like viscose and lyocell, are some of the most confusing to understand. Are they synthetic, or are they natural? Well, it's a little bit of both.

Rayon is an umbrella term for regenerated cellulose fabrics, which are a fascinating blend of nature and science. They start with natural materials like beech, pine, eucalyptus, or bamboo pulp that is put through a series of chemical baths and treatments to turn it into new, longer fibers!

Despite all the names rayon is sold under, most modern types will be soft, breathable, and biodegradable. Some will have more sheen, while others will look more like cotton, but they share the same glorious, silky drape.

Fun fact:
Rayon was originally developed as a cheaper alternative to silk in the late 19th century! Talk about innovation. And while it’s manmade, its natural origins make it breathable and biodegradable—though sustainability depends on how it’s produced.

We created this beginner's guide that introduces the most common types of Rayon and key differences between them. We hope it helps you choose the right fabric for your next project!
