I recently won 4 boxes of random items at an estate auction. Floating among the miscellany was this small slip of a recipe with “Mom’s Applesauce Loaf” scribbled on it.
Normally, I would have recycled something like this but it just so happens that my deep freeze is full of homemade applesauce. Due to flooding rains in the Midwest this summer, there was a bumper crop of apples and people kept giving us bags full as each harvest came in, so I went ahead and tried out Mom’s recipe. I did have to replace the shortening with butter, but I don't think that substitution was much of a downgrade. Thanks to Mom, we upped our household applesauce consumption by about 60%, so I'd say this applesauce loaf recipe is a keeper.
